We Can’t Fit In
By: Calvin J. Moss
James 4:4 says: ye adulterers and adulteress know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
One thing that many teenagers want more than others is to join the “in” crowd. These youths believe that popularity is priority. They talk about the latest rap videos, CDs and DVD etc. They prefer the praise of their peers than the praise of God and their parents. This is also present among adults. Everyone wants to be accepted by others but as Christians, acceptance is not part of the cross because the things of God are foolishness to the world.
James is one of the leaders in one of the churches in Jerusalem. In a nutshell, James talks about Christian conduct, the issues that deal with the Christian life. One of those things I will attempt to address is friendship with the world. The thought that I would like to share with you is we can’t fit in. We have been bought with a price and that price is the blood of Jesus. God almighty has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.
Many Christians want to stay saved but want to fit in with the world at the same time. We want to be accepted and respected but all that does is cause confusion. Some Christians have their saved friends at church and sinner buddies for other things. I believe that God wants us to come out from among them. I am not saying that we cannot speak to those old friends, however I feel that God does not want us to fellowship with them. Instead of being persuaded by sinners to be in the world, sinners should be persuaded to be in Christ because the world needs Christ.
We cannot mix the sweet with sour. First Corinthians 10:21 ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table and of the table of devils. We have been called with a holy calling. Paul the Apostle said the world was crucified to him and he to the world. That is the way I want to be. When Jesus was held captive before Pilate he said my kingdom is not of this world…(St. John 18:36). Jesus was in the world not of the world and so are we. We cannot fit into this world because the world cannot receive Christ. Our desires should not be to fit in with a fallen world but fit in with the God who created the worlds. This world is a sinful and seductive place to live and so evil communications corrupts good manners.
Sometimes Christians try to fit in with the world because they feel like they are missing out on something. The world is quickly passing away. Jesus said heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away. Let us forsake the world’s way of life lest we pass away with it. The Apostle Paul said but I say that the things which the gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils (first Corinthians 10:20). We who are in Christ are the spiritual Israel and cannot fit in with the world. Amen.
